# Give each date its proper meaning

Your occasion and your care

Lesson 01 / Personal dates and clinical goals

The occasion is a fact about your life. The proposed goal is a statement about care. Read both in full, then ask what their relationship actually establishes.

Read the explanation, follow the complete fictional example and keep personal dates separate from clinical arrangements.

## A priority and a clinical goal do different jobs

An appearance priority explains what you want to discuss: for example, how visible appliance components might fit with portraits. A clinical goal explains what the proposed care aims to address. One does not automatically supply the other.

You can tell the orthodontist that a date matters without asking the date to define the clinical course. This gives the conversation useful context while leaving room to understand the proposed goal, its scope and the review arrangements.

## Keep the clinical explanation individual

The AAO describes treatment timing as case\-specific and emphasizes individualized planning and professional oversight. That supports discussing your own explanation rather than applying a calendar rule.

## Avery's complete fictional two\-track example

Avery is considering care before a wedding. The following facts are supplied for this example. They do not recommend an appliance, a review interval or an event\-related treatment schedule.

### Personal track: Avery's fixed plans

- 18 April 2027: portrait session.
- 15 May 2027: wedding.
- Priority: understand visible appliance components and the proposal's purpose before choosing care.

### Clinical track: the stated proposal

- Proposed goal: improve alignment of the front teeth, using a described sequence of clear aligner trays.
- 30 March 2027: a confirmed in\-person review with the fictional treating orthodontist.
- 22 June 2027: another confirmed in\-person review, after the wedding. The team has supplied its existing contact route between reviews.

## Read the reviews as arrangements for care

On the personal track, 18 April is a portrait session and 15 May is the wedding. Those dates explain Avery's priorities. Neither date is labelled as treatment completion on the clinical track.

On the clinical track, 30 March and 22 June are confirmed in\-person reviews. The first happens before the portrait session; the second happens after the wedding. This is useful evidence of what Avery and the fictional team have arranged: two opportunities for clinical review and a supplied contact route between them.

The earlier review can be discussed in relation to Avery's questions. Its timing does not establish readiness for portraits, a particular tooth position or an appearance result. The later review positively shows that the care arrangement continues beyond the occasion.

## A finished reading Avery can use

Avery can now say: 'My personal plans are portraits in April and a wedding in May. The proposed goal is front\-tooth alignment with a described sequence of trays. I have an in\-person review in March, another in June and the team's contact route between them.'

That summary is more precise than 'I have a review before the photos, so the plan must be finished by then.' It preserves the useful event information and the actual care arrangements without adding a promise to either.

The remaining conversation is specific: how the actual appliance components relate to Avery's visibility priority, and how the clinician explains the goal and course in relation to those personal plans. Those points belong in the proposal discussion before Avery chooses care.

## Move from dates to the whole proposal

A date is easier to interpret when the rest of the proposal is visible. The next lesson supplies the goal, appliance description, clinical responsibility and continuing\-care arrangement together, then reads what each part tells Avery.
